. Peder HansenPeder Hansen (1798-1880) was the last Danish Governor of Tranquebar. He was born at Aalborg in Denmark and died in Copenhagen. He arrived in Tranquebar in 1824, was appointed Governor in 1841. He married Harriet Mariah Smyth in 1829. Tranquebar was sold to the English in 1845, while he was the Governor. He spent the period 1845-1846 in China establishing several Consulates, and returned briefly to Denmark before getting appointed as the Governor of Danish West-Indies (presently US Virgin Islands) during 1848-1851. He was elected a member of the Danish parliament in 1854, and served in this post until 1861. His personal papers at the National Archives contain several interesting observations. He had made sketches of several important people connected with the history of Tranquebar, and had made notes on the Danish East Indian colonial history. Several pages from this are reproduced below. |
