Frederik IV (1671-1730) was responsible for the evangelical missionary activity in Tranquebar. After contemplating for several years, he decided to sent evangelical messengers to Tranquebar. In 1704, he approached Dr. Lütkens about the possibility of finding suitable messengers. Lütkens, in turn,  consulted Prof. Francke of Halle, Germany which resulted in two young missionaries, Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg and Heinrich Plütschau arriving at Tranquebar in 1706. Several missionaries from Germany at the behest of the Halle Mission during the next decades. They included people such as Gründler,  Schultze,  Schwartz, Gericke, John and Cämmerer.
